    How Noisy Is Your Dishwasher?

    by BrandSource Canada

Dishwasher noise is measured in decibels (dB): the lower the number of decibels, the quieter the machine. A dishwasher with dB rating of 43 is quieter than a boiling kettle (we’re not talking about the whistle!) and up to four times quieter than a machine with a 56 dB rating, which is on par with the level of a typical speaking voice for most people.

Noise is quite subjective, but most people consider:

    42-46 dB almost silent
    47-50 dB quiet
    51-55 dB normal
    55+ dB loud

Where, when and how often you plan to run your dishwasher affect perceived noise levels. For example, if your appliance is located near the family’s favourite spot to gather and chat, you may wish to opt for a quieter model. But if you run your machine during the day when everyone is gone, then noise level is less important. Cost is a factor as well, since machines with built-in sound minimizing packages tend to be more expensive.

Installation is critical to noise level: if there are significant gaps between your appliance and the cabinetry, or if your machine is not level, even the quietest dishwasher will seem loud. To further minimize dishwasher noise, you can install sound-absorbing foam around your machine or simply load your dishes securely. Loose items create noise as they move about in the wash cycle; properly loaded items stay silently in place.

Finally, don’t sacrifice performance for quiet operation. Whatever the decibel level you choose, be sure to go with an Energy Star qualified appliance.
